Saini motor case: Court orders day-to-day hearing

In a significant development,a Tis Hazari court has ordered day-to-day hearing,commencing on October 12,of the controversial Saini motor case.

Sumedh Singh Saini,Director,Vigilance Bureau,Punjab,is an accused in the case and stands chargesheeted on charges of abduction with intention to murder and criminal conspiracy. There are over three dozen witnesses of which around 30 are yet to be examined in the case. Three witnesses have passed away during the pendency of the trial which is hanging fire since 1994.

The cross examination of all the remaining witnesses will commence from October 12. As per the available

information,the directions were issued by the Tis Hazari court after a communication was received from the Delhi High Court to conclude the case expeditiously.

The communication was sent after Amar Kaur,the 93-year-old petitioner in the case sent a telegram to the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court requesting speedy disposal of the case,which is hanging fire for over 15 years.

On May 24 last the Delhi High Court had directed the lower court to conclude the complete evidence of two material witnesses,including Amar Kaur,in the case on day-to-day basis. The directions were complied with and statements of Amar Kaur and Meenakshi,the aunt of the deceased were completed last year.

“Amar Kaur’s son,son-in-law and her driver were murdered in cold blood by Sumedh Singh Saini by hatching a conspiracy and in connivance with co-accused Sukhmohinder Singh Sandhu,Paramjit Singh and Balbir Singh Tiwari,” Amar Kaur,in an application moved before the Delhi High Court,had stated.

“From her condition,it is highly unlikely that she would survive for too long and would perhaps even not be there by the time judgment is passed in this case. Amar Kaur has been waiting for sixteen long years for justice which has been denied to her,” the application reads.

Accusing Saini and co accused of filing “frivolous and vexatious applications with the sole purpose of delaying the trial”,Amar Kaur demanded day-to-day hearing.
