Chandigarh:City tennis player,Sanam Singh, went down fighting to former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko as he failed to reach the second round of the Malaysian Open tennis tournament on Wednesday. Sanam, who was part of the Indian Davis Cup team that thrashed New Zealand 5-0 in their Davis Cup tie at Chandigarh recently, put up a brave battle against the 31-year-old Russian. After coming agonisingly close to win the first set which he lost 5-7,Sanam once again stretched Davydenko in the second set. However, the highly experienced Russian staved off the brave challenge from Sanam and defeated him 6-4 to set up a second-round clash with Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, who upset sixth seed Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-3,6-2 earlier in the day.
In another second-round encounter, top seed David Ferrer of Spain faces Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr.,who beat British qualifier Dominic Inglot 7-5,6-3.
