In a first-ever initiative,the Press Club of Shimla will join hands with the states tourism department to document the historical facts on media,especially the newspapers of Shimla,the erstwhile summer capital of India.
The first newspaper published from Shimla,according to latest studies,was Mountain Monitor in 1848,closely followed by Shimla Akhbar ab Urdu newspaper. Both could not last for more than an year.
In 1857,when Mangal Pandey sparked off the Mutiny,the news was read by the commander-in-chief of the British Army in Shimla. It was here at the Barnes Court complex the heritage building which was then the army commanders residence where the British army chief planned his action to quell the revolt.
These are a few of the facts and details dug out by a member of the Press Club,which prompted Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to invite the club to share some of these with the states tourism department in its novel project Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai.
Dhumal was speaking at a function organised by the Press Club to mark the formal launch of its silver jubilee celebrations at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Sports Complex here on Saturday.
The CM later inaugurated a North Zone Badminton and Table Tennis Championship organised by the Press Club of Shimla and also honoured a few veteran journalists and founders of the club.
K S Tomar,Senior Editor with Hindustan Times (Jaipur),P N Sharma,Ravinder Randev,Ram Dyal Neeraj,P C Lohumi and D P Uniyal were among those honoured.
Dhumal emphasized the importance of the press in the democratic set-up and lauded the role of newspapers and media personnel who worked in Shimla.
He also gave away prizes to the winners of a painting competition organised for students.
Others who spoke on the occasion were K S Tomar,club president Dhananjay Sharma and general secretary Gian Thakur.
