‘Signs of Naxals re-grouping in state’

While admitting there have been signs of Naxals re-grouping in the state,Punjab Director General of Police P S Gill said their movements were still at a low level and the situation is not serious yet.

The police are in the process of identifying such elements and organisations. The working of some of the human rights organisation are also under the scanner.

He was addressing the mediapersons after the inauguration of the arms licencing and registration branch. Gill said some of the organisations like BKU (Ugrahan) were exploiting social issues to entice the youth into naxalism. However,the police was keeping a watch on the activities of these groups and some arrests were made.

DGP said the Naxals will not be allowed to raise their heads in the peaceful state.

In the last six months,63 persons from various terrorist organisations,including Babbar Khalsa International (BKI),KLF and KCF,had been arrested. Replying to a question,he said the police was also investigating foreign funding of some human rights organisations.

About the recovery of RDX and other explosive material,he said it had entered in state from Pakistan through the border.

On out of turn promotions of some officers,and the subsequent resignation by two sub-inspectors,the DGP said both the officers did not approach any senior officers and had submitted the resignation to the media. He also said the promotions were the prerogative of the DGP.

When it was pointed out the DGP’s driver and drivers of other senior police officers violated traffic norms in the city and were seen without seat belts,he said that they were fit cases for issue of challans
