Sippy Sidhu murder: Police retrieve phone data, claim ‘vital’ clues

Police sources said after the iPhone was unlocked, some data - including some ‘WhatsApp’ messages and text messages - had got “corrupted” but with the help of IT and forensic experts, the data was retrieved.

THE UT police Saturday said they had retrieved the data from Sippy Sidhu’s iPhone and claimed that they had got some “vital clues”. Sidhu was shot dead by unidentified assailants on September 20.

Police sources said after the iPhone was unlocked, some data – including some ‘WhatsApp’ messages and text messages – had got “corrupted” but with the help of IT and forensic experts, the data was retrieved.

“The data is vital. It contains some important conversations of Sippy with his close friends. We have got more clues,” said a police officer part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The police added that they have again questioned a Delhi-based man who was in touch with Sidhu and also sent some messages to him. Police sources said that two women — one based in Mohali and the other in Sector 27 here — were given clean chit after questioning. “The whole investigation is now focused in Uttar Pradesh. We are connecting the links,” claimed a senior police officer.

A police officer dismissed any political motive in the crime and said it was the fallout of either “ jealousy linked to love or property dispute.” Sippy had reportedly been preparing to contest the elections in 2017.

After unlocking the iPhone, the police learnt that when Sippy Sidhu entered the park, another person was with him as “his phone was moving in a parrel direction with that of Sippy’s.” Police sources also said a male office aide of Sippy, who had accompanied him on a few business tours, had been questioned.
