The partys over at your home, and the garbage bin carries its last signs paper plates and glasses, beverage cans and the six-pack rings used to hold these cans, among others. Next time, dont throw away the six-pack rings. Instead, become a part of an international community that is creating artwork and accessories such as jewellery and belts and even curtains from these. Environmentalists are up in arms against six-pack rings because several marine animals get entangled in these and choke to death. In the film,Happy Feet, the penguin Lovelace finds his neck clasped in a six-pack ring.
No matter how far you are from the nearest shore, you can join the movement and learn how to transform ugly waste into beautiful artwear, says US-based artist Tatiana Pagès on http://www.origomu.com,the website where images of these designs have been displayed.
More than 300 participants from over 25 countries such as the US,the UK,Ecuador and Portugal besides India are participating in this project. Together, they have sent over 500 designs, using artwork to create awareness of an object that is considered to be one of the biggest threats to marine life.
One of the participants is Shyam Patwardhan Joshi who has created a conceptual neckpiece by combining a number of six-pack rings. Another piece by him, called Crab Walk, combines a six-pack ring with crab shells. Jose Ruano,on the other hand, has created a work that reminds people of the pain of strangulation. Titled Asphyxia,it uses masses of six-pack rings to create a work resembling a fur wrap that covers the neck. Ana Karen Rios Valdes has used 48 six-pack rings to make a muffler-style piece that express the suffering that animals experience when caught in a six-pack ring.
Origomu will exist until the day we destroy the last six-pack ring, states the website, and the artists could well be on their way to achieving this aim. Origomu has collected over two lakh six-pack rings via the web,and through art workshops, organisations and contests. Join in with your design.
