With its traffic SMS alert services in the city facing teething problems, the Chandigarh Police has now joined hands with two FM stations to keep commuters aware of the traffic situation in the city. To begin with, the two radio channels – 92.7 and 94.3 – will broadcast traffic updates almost every hour to ensure motorists in the city can plan their travel accordingly. An awareness campaign will also be broadcast through these FM stations.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Chandigarh,Alok Kumar said it was important for the police to keep people informed about traffic updates through different channels, whether it was a Facebook page or the traffic SMS alert service. Though SMS service is facing some problems which will be solved in the days ahead, the radio is emerging as a powerful tool to reach the public. That is why we have roped in the two FM channels initially for a month as part of road safety awareness campaign. The aim is to make people aware about the road safety and make them follow traffic rules so that accidents are brought down and city roads are made safe, DIG,Kumar said.
If there is a traffic jam or some road gets inundated, there will be updates on the radio and it will keep commuters informed of such obstructions. Even those at home after listening to the FM can inform their friends and relatives as to which route to take, he added.
An official of 92.7 FM,Nipun said the channels road safety announcement campaign will include traffic slogans, activities by radio jockeys for traffic awareness and on air interviews with senior officers of the Chandigarh Traffic Police.
