Many parts of Himachal Pradesh,including tourist destination of Manali,on Monday experienced fresh snowfall while other areas were lashed by rain,disrupting traffic on national highways and many link roads.
Reports from Manali said the tourist resort witnessed 35 cm snowfall while other areas like Kalpa in Kinnaur and a few areas of Shimla also received snow on Monday. Higher reaches of the state reported very heavy to moderate snowfall. Kullu town got snowfall for a second time this year.
The rain continued during the day. Sundernagar recorded rain of 53.5 mm followed by Bhuntar in Kullu (48.9 mm),Dharamsala in Kangra (46.8 mm) and Manali (5 mm) respectively.
National Highway-22 between Ambala and Kinnaur was cut off for vehicular traffic beyond Ralli in Kinnaur. However,the Kalka-Shimla road was open for vehicular traffic after Sundays heavy snowfall. Similarly,Chandigharh-Manali road remained off for vehicular traffic at Patlikulal due to landslides.
Minimum temperature of Kalpa was minus 2.5 degrees Celcius,Manali minus 1.2 degrees,Shimla minus 0.2 degrees C,Bhuntar 0.2 degrees C,Dharamsala 2 degrees C and Sundernagar 4.5 degrees C.
The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rain or snow in isolated parts of the state and heavy rain or snow in many parts during the next 24 hours.
A high-level meeting was held here on Monday to take stock of the situation arisen due to heavy snowfall. Principal Secretary (Revenue) Deepak Sanan presided over the meeting. The meeting was informed that electricity supply in major towns had been restored. In Kullu and Manali,the power supply would be restored by Monday. Work of restoration was going on war footing. Efforts were also made to restore electricity in Kinnaur,Kaza and Chopal within next one or two days.
Minimum temperatures rise in Punjab,Haryana
Chandiagrh: Residents of Punjab and Haryana got some respite from the bitter cold on Monday as the minimum temperatures in the two states rose following two days of heavy rain.
Chandigarh,which received 12.8 mm of rain till Monday morning,recorded a minimum of 11.2 degree Celsius,five notches above normal,the meteorological office said here. Mercury rose in Punjabs Amritsar,Ludhiana and Patiala areas after the rain,where minimum temperatures settled at 10.4 degrees Celsius,10.7 degrees Celsius and 10.7 degrees Celsius respectively. However,temperature in Jalandar dipped due to cold wave and rainfall. Nangal Dam,Madhopur,Shahpur Kandi belt,Ropar,Mohali in Punjab also received rain. Ambala in Haryana recorded a low of 11.7 degrees Celsius,up six notches while Hisars minimum settled at 12.1 degrees Celsius,seven degrees above normal. Both the places were lashed by rain. Rohtak registered a low of 12.1 degree Celsius,up five notches,Karnals low was 11.5 degree Celsius,also up five degrees while Bhiwanis minimum at 12.4 degree Celsius was up by six degrees.
