In an attempt to upgrade the security system at the Chandigarh railway station, the 27 CCTV cameras installed there are in the process of being centralised while the Ambala Division headquarters will also have access to the same. Also, the washing sheds at the station are being brought under CCTV surveillance.
The CCTV cameras, installed at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh, cover all the platforms, circulating area, parking lots and entry points of the station. The automatic CCTV cameras provide a backup of 15 days.
Though the control is with the Railway Protection Force (RPF),the technical staff of the Railways is working on the project which will give Ambala Division officials access to the control room at platform number one. The project is expected to be operational soon. On similar lines, the CCTV cameras recently installed at Saragnpur would also be centralised.
There was a requirement of appropriate media to materialise the project. This has been met recently with the Railways providing its own interface media. Centralisation would help in case of lapse in the security at the Chandigarh railway station, said Ambala Divisional Railway Manager H K Jaggi.
The Chandigarh RPF post in-charge Inspector N K Dubey said,We have requested the Division to provide cameras in the cleaning sheds where the trains are washed. As the staff cannot be present at all times, this would help increase the security cover. Recently, there have been instances where incidents have occurred in these secluded sheds.
