In a move to address a popular demand of the residents of the city, the Department of Information Technology is in the process of introducing the service of railway booking at its Sampark Centres soon.
The decision to provide the facility of rail reservation has been taken by the Department of Information Technology based on the requests received from Resident Welfare Associations of various sectors.
In this regard, the Department of Information Technology has had preliminary discussions with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited in New Delhi – the public sector enterprise of Ministry of Railways that is responsible for managing the service of internet ticketing.
Presently, there are 11 railway booking counters in the Tricity, yet there has been a long pending demand from residents to start the ticket service at the sampark centres.
Accordingly, the Department has been working on provisioning web-enabled railway reservations at Sampark Centres. The rail reservation service is likely to be launched shortly. As of now,the city has about 20 sampark centres and there are plans to start 10 more in the near future.
To enable this, the Department of Information Technology will set up a seamless link with IRCTCs internet ticketing service at the backend. IRCTC provides similar services in Delhi,Chennai,Bangalore,Kolkata and Mumbai.
As per IRCTC over 2 lakhs railway tickets are booked daily using IRCTCs system and at present around 48 per cent of the total reserved railway tickets are being booked through IRCTCs system.
