A noted vascular surgeon today said that every diabetic should take utmost foot-care to avoid higher prevalence of limb amputation arising out of gangrene. Dr Ravul Jindal,Vascular Surgeon,Fortis Mohali said this on the occasion of World Diabetes Day today. The World Health Organization (WHO) has marked this year’s World Diabetes Day as day for its education and prevention.

“Diabetes renders foot lesion more susceptible to gangrene than in lesion of non-diabetic foot. People from lower strata of society and those living in rural areas run high risk of losing their limb due to lesion. Here education and prevention play pivotal role in awakening masses,” he said. Diabetes can cause patient lose sensations and block leg arteries causing foot ulcers. While foot ulcers are the main cause of amputation in diabetic patients, most of these amputation can be prevented if treated early and properly.

“Specialized treatment like angioplasty or bypass for arterial blockage too plays major deterrent role in amputation. When done timely,it saves limb, and life in some cases as well,” he added.
