Asked if the officer was under some kind of threat,Singh said: “This was our first line of investigations. We have checked his work profile and have not found any such threat.” The police are looking into the suicide angle as well. However,a search of Chander’s room in the guesthouse failed to provide any clues. Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Ludhiana) G S Randhawa has appealed to the people to help trace him.

Manish Gupta,Additional Commissioner of Income Tax,said: “Chander is one of our best officers. No one ever complained about him. I would not say that he was under some kind of acute depression. He was taking medicines and performing well. “Asked if Chander was handling any sensitive case,he said: “There was no such case. He had been given additional charge of two Ludhiana ranges just two or three days before he went missing.”
