Its Father’s Day,and here’s how you can him feel like Daddy Cool
I held your hand and the journey of life became a fulfilling one this is what one wants to convey on Father’s Day, says Madhu Sharma,a postgraduate student, adding that she finds it unfair that we celebrate Father’s Day with that fervour as Mother’s Day. So pull out the stops on June 20 as Fathers Day turns 100. Though the Day formally came into existence in 1910 (It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in almost 52 countries around the world),historians say there was a similar tradition thousands of years ago. There are stories about how,4,000 years ago in Babylon ,a lad called Elmesus carved a clay card to wish his father a long and healthy life.
Today, everyone likes to do the same but in different ways. The markets are packed with gift items ranging from diaries to cookies but,if you want to say it in a traditional form, check out Archies Apex Solution,Sector 46 in Chandigarh, which offers snazzy scrolls for the occasions. Ajay Kharb, owner of the shop, says,The scrolls are made of cotton mixed with jute and come for prices between Rs125 and Rs165.
There are elegant photo frames and plywood pen stands between Rs150 and Rs 250,as well as Ziro quotation calendars and match-box sized quotation books. This year Archies has come up with a special perfume named My Emotion-For my Dad which costs Rs 500 per pack, he adds. If you are willing to dig a little deeper into your pocket, you could surprise your father with bar sets or office sets, which range from Rs 600 to Rs 1,500, says Rita Malhotra,a customer at Archies Gallery in Sector 17. Karandeep Gulati, owner of Archies Gallery-17,adds that items made from red wood are in vogue, and one could pick up trendy show-pieces or good luck statues. But red wood is costly so one must be ready for a price tag between between Rs800 and Rs 1,600, says Gulati. Antique boxes made of red wood, which can also be used for keeping wine bottles, will be a good choice for Father’s Day. These cost between Rs 600 and Rs 3,000.
If your dad is a lover of art,he would love the silk and cloth paintings done in Mughal or Krishana style of painting and available at Phulkari in Sector 17,a Punjab government emporium. Their prices range from Rs 250 to Rs 800. Yashodha Bisht, sales executive at the Emporium, also points out the wooden and clay sculptures that have been given a minute finishing which can’t be done through machines. Mandeep Kaur,a customer,is picking up a classic messenger style bag that can carry laptops, documents or anything else that goes in a man bag. At Phulkari, these bags costRs 250 onwards. Khadi kurtas and shirts always a boon in the sultry weather are available in all sizes at Khadi ,Sector 17,a semi-government outlet. Rakhu Ram Sharma,Manager at Khadi, says,These garments are skin friendly and come in pure cotton as well as a silk-cotton mix. These are available in various colours and the price ranges from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 for cotton kurtas and between Rs 250 and Rs 1,200 for silk. You can also take your pick from brands like Waterman,Sheaffer and Parker, with prices that can go up to Rs 17,000.
