Lack of planning by the engineering wing is quite evident from the condition of slip roads. Slip roads in some sectors have been under construction for the past more than a year with work not being completed. The ones that are already constructed are in a pitiable state. The shortage of construction material is adding to the woes.
In some sectors the land on which the slip roads were to be constructed was dug up almost a year back. But while digging was done and gravel laid, carpeting is yet to be completed. The reasons vary in different sectors. At some places, trees fall in the middle of the slip roads. Till these are removed, the slip roads cannot be opened for traffic.
Getting permission for chopping off trees is a tedious process. Officials state that permission is given by the Adviser which in itself takes time. When the tenders are floated for chopping trees at times no one comes forward. The contractors are not willing to chop off certain trees due to the religious sentiments attached to these. In some other areas where slip roads were to be constructed, cables were unearthed during digging. These would now have to be shifted before work is undertaken.
The Engineering department has written to the respective departments who have to undertake the work. There has been a shortage of construction material that is affecting the work for carpeting of the roads. Further during rains the work slows down. An official said that the slip roads were under construction and work had been delayed due to problems at the site. He said that different departments have been asked for clearance for cutting trees, removing cables, etc.
The work on the slip roads would then be completed. Residents say these problems should have been foreseen when construction was started. Residents are facing problems due to the patches that have been dug up. The work once started should have been completed, said Councillor H C Kalyan.
The contractors at many places are unwilling to work when the rates that are offered are less than market rates. The condition of the slip roads is such that it can lead to accidents, he added.
Potholes in the slip roads in different sectors make it a bumpy ride for the commuters.
