Victoria saunters into next round

Though Victoria Chahal emerged winner in both the sets,there was a contrast in the style in which she overwhelmed Himani Mor 7-6 (4),6-0 in her win in the second round match in the girls’ Under-16 singles category during the AITA Championship Series being conducted by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association on Tuesday.

In the first set,both the players fought evenly and as desperation for points grew,the momentum swung to and fro between the players. However,the Sonipat girl Victoria held her nerves and took the first set in a tie-breaker by 7-6 (4). And unlike the expectations of the people who had predicted a tough second set between the two players,it turned out to be a smooth walk for Victoria,a trainee at National Training Academy,Gurgaon,as he outplayed Mor to win the set at 6-0.

Meanwhile,after losing first set,Charvi Saxena of Delhi Public School ,staged a grand rally to beat another local trainee Vibhuti Khullar in three sets in the girls under-16 singles second round match. Charvi lost the first set at 4-7 but just managed to win the next in tie-breaker 7-6 (5). After leveling the score at one-set all,Charvi was in total command as she raced to a 6-0 triumph in the third and deciding third set.

Local girl Nandini Sharma and Maharashtra ‘s Mihika Yadav scored victories in contrasting styles in the girls’ under-12 singles second round matches. Nandini outplayed Neelanchal Gupta in straight sets at 6-1,6-2,while Mihika,down by one set,rallied to overcome a stiff resistance from Aboli Gorghi,also of Maharashtra, three well-contested sets 4-6,6-3,6-4.
