He hit the headlines after he punched a pocket knife on ex-Haryana DGP S P S Rathore’s face in February. He was booked for his impulsive act,but today when the 68-year-old IPS officer was sent to jail,Utsav Sharma says he is satisfied.
“I am ashamed of my act. I was totally engrossed with the Ruchika case and it infuriated me to see that the case was being delayed. But today I am happy,” the 29-year-old told Newsline over the phone from his home in Varanasi. He is now out on bail. “I should not have taken the law in hands. Judiciary is powerful and it was proved today,” he said.
On February 8,Utsav had attacked Rathore outside the district court complex. He was arrested, but the police did not find any motive behind the ‘act of rage’. After investigation police said he suffered from mental disorder.
“I came to Chandigarh to watch the case closely. I was very disturbed and thought enough was enough. I took out my knife stabbed Rathore. Now I realise I shouldn’t have done that. It was wrong,” he said.
Utsav is a student of National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and is about to complete his studies. The gold medallist from Banaras Hindu University says he has big dreams to fulfil. “I try to forget what had happened. I am concentrating on my future,” he said.
The police are yet to file a chargesheet in the case and the next hearing is in July.
