Wheat crop in Ferozepur sub-divisions suffer damage

Heavy rains, accompanied by hailstorm, caused extensive damage to wheat crop in Zira and Jalalabad — the two sub-divisions of Ferozepur.

Heavy rains, accompanied by hailstorm, caused extensive damage to wheat crop in Zira and Jalalabad — the two sub-divisions of Ferozepur. According to the district administration, approximately, more than 20,000 acres of standing wheat crop has been damaged.

In Zira alone, more than 15,000 acres has been affected — the damage ranges from 5 to 100 per cent, said DC Kamal Kishore Yadav. Besides, rainfall (7 mm) in Jalalabad on Monday had damaged around 5,000 acres of standing wheat crop. The damage estimate here ranges from 5 to 20 per cent.

More than eight villages in Jalalabad have suffered from rainfall. Damage has been reported from Ferozepur city and cantonment area as well.

A survey of various mandis of the district revealed a sorry state of affairs when it comes to storage facilities. Thousands of wheat bags were seen lying in the open without waterproof sheets, which have to be provided by the commission agents. “I have issued notices to eight commission agents in Ferozepur city mandi. They have been told to bring more sheets or their services will be suspended from the mandi. Many have complied with the orders and our officers are keeping a strict vigil to ensure the adequate storage facilities,” said the DC.

The Ferozepur Cantonment has one shed to store wheat bags — nearly 10,000 bags have been stored here and over 50,000 are lying in the open. A few has been covered by waterproof sheets. Nand Kishore Gugan, president of the Ferozepur Ahrtiya Association, said: “We are trying to get the maximum number of waterproof sheets possible. We were not aware that the weather is going to turn bad. Besides, the mandis do not have proper sheds. In Focal Point mandis,no shed has been constructed. Farmers are bringing materials with more than 17 per cent moisture, that is another problem.”

Divisional Commissioner (Ferozepur Division) Raminder Singh said: “The detailed report of damage will be sent to the financial commissioner revenue so that the farmers are given suitable compensation.”
