“It’s a network of creative minds and a platform for readers, writers and literature lovers to get together, share and exchange ideas and get booked,’’ smiles poet, author and bureaucrat Sumita Misra, who chairs the Chandigarh Literary Society (CLS),launched on Friday evening. The forum, quips Misra, will bring together budding and established writers in the region and facilitate presentation and publication of papers, books, articles and other works.

Misra feels there was a need for a society like CLS to promote the region’s languages and also some cultural activities in the process. “The idea is to involve the common man in literary activities and not restrict literature to a niche audience, with a special emphasis on encouraging young writers, both published and new,” adds Misra.

short article insert CLS is a not-for-profit registered body, with members all set to have a busy schedule, which includes book readings, seminars, conferences, workshops and symposia of local, regional, national and international level. Creative writing is an activity that’s high on the agenda of CLS. ‘’The plan is to bring together writers, publishers, academia, intellectuals, students, and scholars,’’ adds writer Madhav Kaushik, secretary of CLS.

The CLS logo is a tree, which has its stem in the form of a pencil, which draws its inspiration from diverse streams represented by the branches, and the leaves in the shape of Chandigarh’s symbol of a hand, which in itself epitomises “open to give, open to receive”. “It fits perfectly with the mission of CLS,’’ says Misra.

For its launch,CLS invited actor and author Anupam Kher, who shared the journey of his debut book,The Best Thing About You is You,which talks about a variety of self-management techniques, anger syndrome, conquering stress, and getting rid of fears, illustrated with his own experience, learning and knowledge. “The book does not promise any overnight change, but shows the way through practical tips as to how one can start the process of channelising one’s

energy,’’ said Kher.
