Contrary to expectations,attendance at the World Series Hockey (WSH) was dismal. Empty stands gave a gloomy look to the tournament,which had promised to entertain people. The crowd was sparsely distributed in a sea of stands and that despite the fact that people from the region are considered to be big hockey fans.
Many of my friends did not want to come and watch the match because of the absence of star players. However,I am a hockey lover and I am here to support the players, said Ravinder Singh,a resident of Phase VII Mohali.
They crowd,though in less number,were entertained by an ensemble of singers,Bollywood stars and dancers started to build up the tempo for the match. Harshdeep Kaur signaled the opening ceremony with the recitation of Ek Aumkar.
And as the captains of the respective hockey league teams graced the stage,the spectators gave maximum applause to Rajpal Singh and Prabhjot Singh,skippers of Delhi and Punjab teams,respectively.
The fun had just begun as Saif Ali Khan,despite embroiled in recent controversies,showed up and kept the spectators glued to their seats through the trailer of his upcoming film,Agent Vinod. Following a message from Ajay Maken,the sports minister,the onus once again fell on the singers to get the crowd into the groove.
Harshdeep Kaur once again returned,this time with chartbusters like Katiya Karu. With an entourage of dancers,Neha Dhupia,dressed in black and red,swayed to the tunes of Chhammak Challo and Kolavari Di and entertained the crowd with her jhatkas and matkas.
WSH brand ambassador Suniel Shetty appealed to the people to support hockey and promised the hockey league would be the best thing ever to have happened to the Indian hockey. Last but not the least,Mika,the Punjab puttar,regaled the crowd with hits like Singh is King and Gabru.
