An officer in the know said: “It is learnt that the children were returning from school when they decided to go into the river to collect coconuts for some religious venerations, leaving their clothes and shoes near the bank.”

A passerby, who spotted one of the children drowning, dived into the river to save him but got stuck in quicksand, said the official, adding that after the Phase 2 police was informed about the incident, a team of divers from NDRF’s Delhi and Ghaziabad units rushed to the spot.
