Nearly 300 cases of rape and more than 500 cases of molestation have been registered across 181 police stations in the capital in the first two months of this year, Delhi Police statistics show.
The Delhi Police termed the still high number as the result of more women coming forward to lodge complaints against sexual crimes. “With the new law in place and the police more sensitised, women have new self-confidence. This is why we keep pressing for more women officers, so that women complainants can record their complaints without any problem. Easier registration of cases caused a spurt in reported crimes against women in 2013. The trend continued in 2014,” Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said.
“Now, if we see those figures in continuation in 2015, we find that they are almost similar, even lower. I can say that it is a good thing that whenever there is a crime against women, it doesn’t remain hidden,” he added.
Out of the 300 cases, two-thirds have been solved, police claimed. Analysis of the data available with police also reveals that nearly 96 per cent rapes were committed by those known to the victim or her family members. Only in 4 per cent cases, strangers were found involved.
Bassi said he wants self-defence to be part of school curriculum so that by the time a girl is 15, she can learn to fight back.
