In the first week of June,a group of men who claimed to be railway passengers hired a Maruti Eeco from the Old Delhi station. They asked the taxi driver to take them to Bakhtawarpur in North Delhi, but when they were close to Alipur they told the driver to stop for a short break. The men soon overpowered the driver, assaulted him and later fled with the car. Since then police have been on the lookout for this gang of highway robbers. On Saturday, five of them landed in police net with officers claiming to have solved five cases of carjackings and highway robberies. Those arrested by the Crime Branch were identified as Amit alias Prem Singh,Aman Sharma,Sushil Kumar,Ajay and Yogesh Kumar all residents of Sonepat. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra S Yadav said police were looking for the men since the sensational robbery in Alipur. Police said they had been working on the information they received about similar cases of robberies from the highways. On Saturday, police came to know that a key member of the gang would be at Majnu Ka Tila. We formed a team and laid a trap. We managed to arrest all the five gang members from the parking lot of the gurdwara, a police officer said. Last month, the gang waylaid a truck carrying around 800 kilograms of copper. Police said they had again posed as passengers and later drugged the driver of the truck.
