A 65-YEAR-OLD man allegedly died after being taken into police custody in Greater Noida on Sunday.
Jodhanath was detained along with his 15-year-old son and two brothers over a complaint lodged by one Mukesh from Jalpura village. The complaint was lodged at Bisrakh police station, and the Greater Noida police picked them up on Saturday.
Jodhanath developed health problems late in the night, following which he was released and taken to a hospital. Police said he died of a cardiac arrest. The autopsy report is awaited.
The son alleged that Jodhanath went into shock after the way the police treated him. My father was in a deep state of shock and the police did not even take him to a hospital. After our village pradhan intervened, they released us. But my fathers condition got worse. When I took him to hospital,it was too late. He had died, he said.
Jodhanath was taken by police for questioning about a monetary dispute between the two families.
The body was cremated in the presence of the police on Monday. The District Magistrate met Jodanaths family at the Collectorate on Monday.
At the request of the villagers,an Superintendent of Police-level inquiry was instituted to check for cases of alleged police high-handedness.
We are looking into the matter, but it is most likely a case of a cardiac arrest, said Gautam Budh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Jyoti Narayan.
