The All India Food Processors Association (AIFPA) moved the Delhi High Court on Wednesday with a petition to hear it before passing a final order on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL),seeking a ban on junk food and aerated drinks in the vicinity of educational institutions.
Appearing for the association,AIFPA counsel Mukul Rohtagi told a bench headed by Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri that the petitioner had failed to specify what kind of products should be included in the category of junk food or fast food as the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act had not made any such definition. The petitioner also failed to elaborate on the kind of foods that should be banned in the vicinity of schools,he added.
It said the court should not intervene at a stage when the government has invited proposals from organisations and institutions,in consultations with scientific panel,to issue guidelines.(PIL),seeking a ban on junk food and aerated drinks in the vicinity of educational institutions.
