AIIMS sends reply to doctor accused of molestation: Wait for cops’ closure report

The AIIMS administration has rejected the reinstatement appeal of Neurosurgery resident doctor Shejoy Joshua, accused of molesting an eight-year-old boy admitted in the hospital ICU.

The AIIMS administration has rejected the reinstatement appeal of Neurosurgery resident doctor Shejoy Joshua, accused of molesting an eight-year-old boy admitted in the hospital ICU.

In its probe, police did not find any merit in the allegations levelled by the child’s family.

On Saturday, the institute sent a five-page reply to the resident doctor, signed by the registrar “on the orders of the Director”.

According to the reply,“A report submitted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police,Sub Division,Hauz Khas,South District, states in the end: ‘Further investigation is in progress and the doctor will be subjected to further tests/questioning if needed’. Therefore,it will be incorrect to assume that he has been exonerated by the police.”

The AIIMS reply also quotes findings of the examination by its internal committee and director. “(They) have established that the doctor unauthorisedly took a minor patient to the doctor’s duty room without the help of either any hospital staffer or attendant of the patient for the purpose of helping him pass urine, although there was a patient urinal available in the nearby ICU.”

The AIIMS report also cites Clauses 3,4 and 5 from the Code of Conduct for AIIMS students, arguing that the doctor’s actions fall under the ambit of the disciplinary action, including expulsion. The strongly worded report said: “Being a highly prestigious and India’s premier institute,it is the responsibility and obligation of the institute to protect the interests of children whose parents report complete faith and trust in the institute, its faculty and other staff.”

Meanwhile, the resident doctors’ body at AIIMS has planned a “black day” on Monday to mark the “death of justice” at AIIMS. “Residents will wear black badges and assemble for an hour-long protest in the afternoon. A section of the faculty will also be joining us,” a representative said.

According to police,a narco analysis will be conducted on the doctor before a closure report is filed. “The doctor himself suggested we do a narco analysis test. He has already undergone a lie detector test. After conducting this final test,we will take a decision on the closure report,” a police officer said.
