Public works Department (PWD) Minister Satyendra Jain on Friday said the department has been directed to repair potholes and rough patches on all roads under its control within three weeks.
“All roads measuring 60 feet and above — about 1,260 km across the national capital — will be repaired within this deadline. A survey conducted by the PWD found 213 potholes, of which 83 have been repaired. The number of rough patches is 1,969 (roughly 25,500 square metres),” Jain said.
He said the department will perform the repair work on war-footing. The last such repair work was carried out more than five years ago, the minister said.

Jain said the traffic volume leads to quick wear and tear of roads and there is an urgent need to maintain quality of roads for smooth flow of traffic and safety of motorists and pedestrians. The minister said he hoped that the three municipal corporations will also undertake such repairs to maintain the roads under their control.
The PWD is also working on a plan to reduce waterlogging on roads during monsoon, Jain claimed. On the matter of installing CCTV cameras on buses, to ensure women’s safety, the minister said it will take a year’s time to have the cameras up and running.
Jain said though the cameras could be installed on buses any time, without a WiFi network, they will not function.
Since the WiFi project will take a year’s time to be implemented, CCTV cameras on buses will also take a year’s time, he said.
“A year is not that long a time. Without WiFi, CCTV cameras won’t work. So, we will have to wait,” Jain said.
