Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday assured city legislators that the government will wholeheartedly try to provide security to them. Dikshit said she has made it crystal clear that all MLAs should be provided security by the Delhi Police and that she agreed with the legislators on this demand.
The murder attempt on MLA Bharat Singh is shocking and I will write to the Union Home Minister,if necessary, said Dikshit.
A fast increasing population,criss-crossing traffic, economic prosperity, presence of diplomats,VVIPs and Union and State government in Delhi makes the issue of security more complex and challenging. The duties of police personnel in the Capital are not as easy and simple as we understand. The apprehension of terrorist attack also hovers over Delhi all the time, she said.
Initiating a discussion on the law and order condition in the Capital,Leader of Opposition Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Delhi has become the crime, rape and murder capital of the country.
There have been only false claims that the crime rate has come down, but there are incidents of rape and murder reported every day. Look at the headlines everyday. While it is claimed that Delhi has become a first-class city,to my understanding Delhi is a first-class city for criminals, murders and rapists, Malhotra said.
Malhotra pointed out that 6,000 children have gone missing in the last one year and over 1,000 unidentified dead bodies have been found in the Capital in the last four months.
Dikshit defended the Delhi Police saying it is not correct that the police is not doing anything.
Speaker of Assembly Yoganand Shastri also said the security cover for legislators has to be provided as soon as possible. Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta was present in officers gallery in the Assembly.
