Before poll code kicks in,MCD set to push works

With the dates for the municipal polls announced and the election code of conduct set to be imposed from Monday,the civic administration is rushing to sanction development works in the city.

The MCD has called a Standing Committee meeting over the weekend to sanction projects.

The MCD usually does not function over the weekend. No meeting is scheduled over the weekend except the review meeting by the Municipal Commissioner.

“The code of conduct is coming into effect from Monday. So whatever proposals that need to be sanctioned have to be done over the next two days,” said Yogender Chandolia,Standing Committee Chairman.

The BJP-led MCD has listed around 100 proposals for the meeting. Sources said the meeting is likely to pass development works to the tune of Rs 200 crore.

“Varied proposals are on the agenda. Both development projects and maintenance works will be taken up,” said Chandolia.

Civic officials said majority of the listed proposals are regarding maintenance and construction of roads and installation of streetlights. Apart from this,construction of blocks in the MCD schools,drainage work and maintenance of parks are likely to be approved.

A special Standing Committee meeting was called on Friday to sanction purchase of hand-operated sewing machines worth Rs 3.4 crore. The project is aimed at providing employment to poor women,an official said.
