The department of education (DoE) is assessing if students admitted through the EWS (Economically Backward Class) category can be offered free education beyond Class 8, an order issued by the department on Wednesday said.
After the matter was raised in the Vidhan Sabha on March 31, it was directed that a survey be conducted in this regard as per a circular signed by Jay Prakash, Deputy Director of education, private school branch.
This comes days after the Delhi Vidhan Sabha’s committee on welfare of SC/ST recommended providing free education to EWS/DG (disadvantaged groups) in private schools from Class 8 to 12.
The order further directed DoE officials to collect necessary information from private schools operating on private lands.
Besides, it has asked schools to provide details of students who completed Class 8 in 2021-2022.
It further sought information about whether a student shifted to another school or dropped out, along with a reason for the particular choice by student or their guardian. The information was requested to be submitted by April 24.
