The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has devised two schemes for students taking the Class X exam under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) starting March 2013. The Board is providing two options for students to continue studying with CBSE or move to a different Board after Class X. Under these schemes,for those who do not wish to move out of CBSE,question papers and marking scheme will be supplied by the Board and evaluation shall be carried out by the school. For those who wish to move out of CBSE,question papers and marking scheme will be prepared by the Board and evaluation will be carried out by the Board through external examiners. The Board had changed the percentage for summative assessments (SA) in 2012 to give equal weightage to both SA-1 and SA-2 30 per cent for each. While the four formative assessments (FA) would carry 10 per cent each. When CBSE introduced CCE for Class IX in October 2009,extending it later to Class X,the weightage given to SA-1 and SA-2 was 20 and 40 per cent,respectively. According to CCE,the academic session was divided into two terms and both the terms had two FAs and one SA. The philosophy of the evaluation programme was that instead of an annual written examination,students must be assessed through the academic session with the aid of various projects,quizzes,assignments,class tests and co-curricular activities. The FAs can be conducted through multiple modes of assessment such as assignments,quizzes,debates,group discussions and projects,whereas SA is a written,end-of-term examination consisting of objective type,short-answer and long-answer questions. Meanwhile,the weightage for the FAs in both the terms will remain the same. The four formative assessments in an academic year (FA1,FA2 in first term,FA3 and FA4 in second term) will continue getting 40 per cent of the total weightage. The SAs will now receive 60 per cent of the total weightage in an academic year.
