Emphasising the need for understanding the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system,Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday said CCE could not succeed till the examination system is transformed. It will not succeed if you keep regurgitating textbooks, he said while inaugurating a Centre for Assessment,Evaluation and Research in the Capital. The centre is a joint collaboration of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Pearson Foundation. It aims to promote learner-centric pedagogies and school-based assessment. Speaking on the occasion,Sibal said: We need to absorb the best education practices around the world and ensure that our system is ready for them. Education has to be looked at holistically and it is important to link all sections from primary education to universities. The process of learning was no more teacher-centric but student-centric. The newly-inaugurated centre will develop research and assessment capabilities and resources for the CBSE,its schools and teachers. In the first year,the centre will carry out research on the implementation of the CCE in schools and undertake a critical evaluation of CBSEs current examination and feedback system. The centre will be part of the CBSE,headed by its chairman Vineet Joshi. Explaining the purpose of the centre,Joshi said: The centre will primarily provide resources for timely reforms and formalisation of school-based assessment. He said the centre has already conducted two workshops in Kerala and Delhi for assessing and providing feedback for student learning. Joshi said there has been a spirit of fresh thinking after the introduction of CCE and research is needed to collate the efforts so far. The centre will be funded by Pearson Foundation in its first two years.
