Confused Cohen and a Slice of Bukhara

Day One of WIFW Spring-Summer 2013 was a mixed bag.

Day One of WIFW Spring-Summer 2013 was a mixed bag. The clothes that walked the ramp for Kolkata designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh were confused. Was it the Middle East that inspired Ghosh or legendary Canadian musician Leonard Cohen’s husky voice and poetry of heartbreak? Boring colours, unflattering silhouettes and loud flowers as motifs weren’t pleasant. Cohen’s words deserve better.

The same show’s other half,Poonam Bhagat’s collection, was titled “Taika”. It was all about the forgotten Central Asian fabric, from areas such as Bukhara and Samarkand, with intricate needle work on it called suzani. She used colours such as black, red, cream and white extensively and the result was a fun collection of cotton lamp dresses, chanderi wrap dresses, jackets, silk pants, jumpsuits and long robes with shararas. Cherry on top? Beautiful motifs such as moon and sun disks, lilies, poppies and iris. A collection full of elegance and grace.
