Delhi Assembly Speaker to hold first PAC meeting today

The meeting, which sources said would be a preparatory one, will be the first step towards the tabling of a consolidated report – including recommended action against former government functionaries – which is likely during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly in July.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta will on Friday convene the first meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is mandated with assessing alleged losses to the state exchequer due to the previous AAP government’s policies as per Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India findings.

The meeting, which sources said would be a preparatory one, will be the first step towards the tabling of a consolidated report – including recommended action against former government functionaries – which is likely during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly in July.

“It is just the first sitting and it is procedural. We mainly want to ensure coordination between different government departments, and members of the committee, with representatives of the CAG at the core of the exercise,” Gupta told The Indian Express.

“The status of the implementation of the Audit Para Monitoring System (APMS) and action taken on CAG reports presented during the second session of the Assembly will be the priorities of the meeting,” he added.

According to sources in the Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker wants to wrap up the assessment of ‘action taken notes’ on the tabled CAG reports, the reply of government departments to issues pointed out in the reports, the CAG’s comments on them and the PAC’s decision on recommended action to be completed “within three months”.

The nine-member PAC, which also includes former Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Atishi, will be part of similar sittings in days to come where deliberations will be held with government officials and CAG representatives to affix accountability in regard to established financial losses to the state exchequer due to lacunae in the formulation of policies, their implementation or other decisions taken during the tenure of the previous AAP government.
