Somnath Bharti, a former Delhi law minister, has been embroiled in a case of domestic violence filed by his wife.
Taking note of the allegations of torture and abuse levelled against former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti by his wife, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to grant him anticipatory bail. The special public prosecutor (SPP) said police would arrest Bharti soon and take him in for custodial interrogation.
The bench of Justice Suresh Kait took note of the numerous allegations raised by Bharti’s wife, Lipika Mitra.
It also took into account the two FIRs registered against Bharti last year at Malviya Nagar police station after he conducted “raids” at the residences of African women in Khirki Extension. The bench noted that his conduct “speaks volumes”, and “shows that he is not only violent and outrageous at home but also in public”.

The court also discussed the entire sequence of events narrated by Lipika since her wedding to Bharti in December 2010, noting that the allegations of abuse were “not new”
“The allegations of abusing, slapping and misbehaving are not new. Earlier too, the complainant filed complaints against the petitioner…,” said the court.
The bench took note of the serious injuries caused to Lipika when she was seven months’ pregnant, which were described in a detailed email sent by her to Bharti in 2013.It also observed that Bharti’s conduct on being granted interim bail “could not be appreciated”, as he went to the police station at 2 am with his dog. “He has misused the protection granted by this court,” said the bench.
The bench also said that no relief could be given to Bharti against arrest since the allegations were “very serious”.
The FIR against Bharti includes charges of attempt to murder, causing hurt by using a dangerous weapon, attempt to cause miscarriage, cruelty, cheating, criminal intimidation among others.
Special Public Prosecutor Shailender Babbar said custodial interrogation of Bharti was required to find the knife with which he had attacked Lipika.
Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, Bharti’s counsel, said he would approach the Supreme Court for urgent relief.
