Delhi weather: Light rain, cloudy skies likely, no warnings for 7 days

Delhi has received 6 per cent below normal rainfall since July 1, which is not uncommon, according to IMD data

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light rain and a generally cloudy sky in Delhi on Sunday. According to the Met Office’s seven-day weather forecast, there is no warning in the capital for the next seven days.

The IMD observed weak rainfall activity as of 11.30 am Sunday in Delhi as the monsoon trough at mean sea level continued to pass through Delhi southeastwards, reaching the northeast Bay of Bengal and extending up to 0.9 km above mean sea level, resulting in ‘isolated’ rainfall.

The Safdarjung base station recorded 13.6 mm of light rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on Sunday. Ayanagar weather station experienced moderate rainfall of 34.8 mm, while Lodhi Road and Palam stations saw 12.4 mm and 7.8 mm of rainfall respectively. Additionally, the Ridge station observed trace amounts of rainfall.

In an X post at 11.55 am, the regional weather forecast centre’s prediction for the next two hours said light to moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning is very likely to occur in Northwest Delhi, West Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, and Southwest Delhi. It also predicted light to moderate rainfall for parts of Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, (Rohtak in Haryana and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan.

Based on IMD data, Delhi experienced seven days of rain in July until last Saturday. The average number of rainy days up to July 13 in previous years was also seven, according to IMD data from 2011 to 2023. The rainfall received thus far is 6 per cent below normal since July 1, which is not uncommon, as per IMD data.

In the last month, the actual rainfall in Safdarjung was 228 per cent above normal, with 243.4 mm of rainfall recorded compared to the season’s normal rainfall of 74.1 mm. More than 90 per cent of rainfall occurred on June 28, with 228.1 mm.

The minimum temperature recorded in Delhi on Sunday was 27.6 degrees Celsius, which is the normal value for this time of year. The maximum temperature recorded on Saturday was 35.6 degrees Celsius, also within the normal range for the season. The humidity ranged between 84 per cent and 94 per cent. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city was moderate at 102, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
