Harish KhuranaBJP MLA-elect from Moti Nagar, Harish Khurana, is no stranger to politics – his father, Madan Lal Khurana, was Delhi’s first BJP CM (1993 to 1996) and then Union Minister in the Vajpayee government. Khurana speaks to Devansh Mittal on his poll debut and how he wrested his father’s seat from 2-time AAP MLA Shiv Charan Goel.
What do you think should be the priorities of the new government?
It is already clear. The Prime Minister himself has made it clear. First priority is to clean the Yamuna, second is to provide good drinking water to the people, third is roads, fourth is desilting of blocked sewers, parks and all these things. We also have to look at how to solve the problem of pollution. These will be the priorities of the Delhi government.
What is your diagnosis of the problems Moti Nagar has faced in the last 10 years? What will you do in the first 100 days in your constituency?
There are a lot of problems in Moti Nagar. Roads are a problem. Sewers are jammed and we have to fix that. Clean drinking water has to be provided. A park has to be built in Sudarshan Park. A community hall has to be built. New public toilets have to be built in Sewa Basti. New drains have to be created and the sewage problem has to be resolved. The water tanker problem in DLF (Capital Greens, a society in Moti Nagar) has to be fixed. All such work will be started in the first 100 days.
All the three municipal wards in Moti Nagar – Moti Nagar, Ramesh Nagar and Karampura – have AAP councillors. How is your relation with them?
Ultimately, development is everyone’s priority. Party line is in its own place and we are in our own place. I will coordinate with all three councillors and we will work together. There are some issues which are under the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), such as parks and small roads. We will work together on these issues.
Will there be a blame game again with you saying that the councillors are not from BJP?
It shouldn’t happen. Ultimately, councillors had blamed their MLA for the work not being done, right? Now that the MLA has changed, there should be coordination, right?
Your father was among the first people to demand full statehood for Delhi in the early 1990s. Will that be on the BJP government’s agenda?
No comment on this.
Usually, JJ (jhuggi-jhopri) clusters have been a weak point for BJP. How did you convince JJ cluster residents to vote for you?
Development is the main issue. We have convinced everyone that we will undertake development works there.
