Once upon a time,in a land called Swabeedoo, there lived happy little Swabeedoo-dahs the residents of this place who exchanged warm fuzzies or warm soft fleece as gestures of goodwill. But soon, cold prickly stones replaced these and filled the blissful land with melancholy. Even as Divya Vibha Sharma a.k.a Chamko Rani transported the audiences at Shriram Centre to the fictitious land of Swabeedoo on Thursday evening, the 25-year-old dancer had a message to spread the absurdity of chasing cold hard cash. As she pranced around the stage, dancing, singing and narrating her story,Sharma used the Irish folktale as the central motif, comparing cold prickly stones to money and all things immoral. The idea is to narrate the story through dance, music and dialogue, says Sharma.
One of the five participants of All Warmed Up,the culmination show of the nine week residency by the Gati Dance Forum,Sharmas tongue-in-cheek performance called Peace of Plastic was a pleasant break from the other two acts that preceded hers.
Both powerful and intense,Sanjukta Waghs Putana and I and Sunithas Woo Man Investigations held the audience captivated. The latter saw Sunitha take up the role of Shoorpanakha, and deal with her desire for Lord Rama, only to be met with rejection. The idea was to broadly highlight how a woman offers herself to a man, said Sunitha, who began her performance with hand gestures and followed them up with an engaging fifteen- minute performance. Wagh,a kathak dancer, based her piece on the myth of Putana, whose life was sucked out through her breast by Lord Krishna. Feminism, sexuality and motherhood are some of the topics which my multi-layered performance touches upon, says Wagh, who,in her 20-minute act, encounters Putana in the year 2012.
Wagh, along with the other four participants, were mentored by international choreographers Susanne Linke and Urs Dietrich and theatre personality,Sankar Venkateswaran during the residency. The last two segments saw Bangalore-based actor Rakesh MPS perform A Dream of Silence as he tried to define the concept of free will, followed by a performance by Manipuri dancer Debanjali Biswas, who traced the story of a girl caught between the agony of loss and hope, like most women in Manipur.
