When a group of three thieves allegedly killed Dr Yogesh Paul, 63, in his Jangpura apartment last month, they first gagged him with his own cap and “strangled” him “with a white muffler that one of the burglars had wrapped around his mouth”. The police probe also showed one of the burglars had stabbed the doctor’s chest “multiple times with a sharp ring-like object”. Several of these details emerged from the post-mortem report.

Dr Paul, who lived with his wife, was murdered inside his flat after a group of thieves entered his residence on May 11.

As per the report, Dr Paul had several laceration marks on both arms and multiple stab wounds. Police said these were caused when one of the accused used his ‘kada’, a thick metal bracelet, which had a sharp edge, and punched him in the chest repeatedly. A police officer said investigators are yet to recover the bracelet. The post-mortem also confirmed he was strangled to death.

A senior officer privy to the contents of the report told The Indian Express that initially, “Dr Paul had fallen and hit his head on the stone floor… one of the accused then put his (Dr Paul’s) cap into his mouth and wrapped his own white muffler around his neck and face, strangling him.”

Police have arrested three of the eight people involved in the case, including the couple’s domestic help of 24 years. Basanti, 60, who had worked at Paul residence as house help for 24 years, the police said, had allegedly hatched the conspiracy and was arrested soon after the murder. Two of her accomplices – Aakash Joshi and his brother, Himanshu were also nabbed. The others, police say, managed to escape to Nepal.

According to Deputy Commissioner Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo, the main motive was to rob the Paul family and Basanti hatched the conspiracy. He said that Basanti had met the other accused through her friend. The friend’s husband got in touch with one of the accused, who hailed from Nepal and was based in Haridwar…, he said, and this man roped in brothers Himanshu and Aakash.
