Transport minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday that the government will host a one-day conference on July 29 in the Delhi Secretariat on strengthening the city’s public transport system. The announcement comes a day after the Cabinet gave an in-principle approval for scrapping the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in South Delhi.
“In order to improve transport in Delhi, the government has set some goals while it earmarked the budget for public transport. There is a lack of integrated planning in the transport system. On Tuesday, we decided to scrap the BRT. If it was done in a planned way, nobody would be inconvenienced…,” Rai said.
Rai said the conference will be held in two sessions. “Experts have been invited to discuss an integrated transport plan for Delhi. The challenge will be to improve the transport system while keeping pollution levels in check,” he said.
