For a few days, a family thought their 22-year-old daughter was killed in a road accident. The initial signs pointed to it too — police found that a black Scorpio ran her over and fled the spot. It was only as police dug deeper that a more sinister story emerged.
Police first received information about the case on January 18 when a 45-year-old man came to register a complaint at Knowledge Park Police station in Greater Noida. He said his daughter was killed two days ago in an accident.
They registered an FIR under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “The Greater Noida police found that the car involved in the accident was a black Scorpio, bearing a Delhi registration plate. It was registered in the name of Shiv Pandey,” said Saad Miya Khan, DCP, Greater Noida.

On Friday, the Greater Noida police arrested Pandey and his wife Pratima, residents of Sultanpur, for the crime. It was during questioning of the couple, police said, that they found that the duo allegedly planned to make it look like a hit and run. It was a murder, police said.
The DCP said the incident occurred in Greater Noida’s Tugalpur area.
During the investigation, police said it was revealed that Pandey and the victim had been in a relationship for over a year after they met in a private company where they worked as marketing professionals. “(The victim was) unaware of Pandey’s marital status… his wife then found out about them,” said the officer.
“The victim, meanwhile, was allegedly pressuring Pandey to give her a share in his property… This did not sit well with Pandey and Pratima and they conspired to kill the victim,” said the DCP.

On January 16, police said Pandey messaged the victim to come to Tugalpur and then allegedly hit her with his car. Pratima was sitting inside, said police.
“We have revised the charges to BNS sections 103(1) (punishment for murder) and 238(a) (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender),” the DCP said.
“We have also recovered the victim’s mobile and the car used in the accident,” said Khan.
