Grime it up

Dance the night away without burning a hole in your wallet at ‘anti-party’ outings.

Event: Grim Riot Disco; Venue: Cool Chef Café,Worli village,Mumbai; Time: 9 pm to 1.30 am,last Saturday. The scene: Nearly 200 revellers grooving to the blaring techno music in the inside space of the cafe done up in kitschy style — with black-and-white stripes dominating its walls and red lights filling the room. The Grime Riot Disco (GRD) night was on in full swing, bringing the disco fever back at a time when the number of discotheques is dwindling.

The Grime Riot Disco (Grime depicting the place these night-outs are hosted,Riot describing a good time and Disco for the dance and music filled evening) was back for its monthly party for its patrons. And the patrons responded enthusiastically by crowding the dance floor.

What makes these outings special is the “anti-party” attitude of the organisers. GRD’s Facebook page clearly advertises a ‘no dress code’ for the visitors. It also says: “Leave your ego and your ‘Pali Hill salon, triple essential oil shampooed hairdo’ at the door”. What comes as a bonus is the cover charge of Rs 250 and subsidised alcohol rates.

Organised by designer Kunal Lodhia and singer-actress Monica Dogra, the GRD night is meant for those looking to relive the disco days or party differently. “A good party with great music, minus the attitude, works anywhere,” says Lodhia. “We call it the anti-party and try to make everyone feel at home, without creating a hole in their wallet.”

In true party spirit, they have kept it open for everyone.

The GRD events,so far, have managed an impressive footfall with the help of its Facebook page and by circulating ‘posters’ with a rebellious touch. The organisers call it the recipe for ‘Bombay’s Realest Dance Party’ with a portrait of the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh featuring in the posters. “We stand for anti-establishment and what better way to represent that than by using a picture of Bhagat Singh,” says Lodhia.

With a membership of 386,their year-old Facebook group hardly seems to be the crowd-puller. “We’ve publicised it quite a bit and those who find out about it,come and those who don’t,well, they miss out,” says Lodhia. This, however, has not stopped them from branching out to Delhi. “We are looking for the right time and place to bring GRD to Delhi. You will have a GRD in Delhi in 2012,” confirm the organisers.

There was a last minute cancellation of the party at the Cool Chef Cafe earlier because of “troubles with the locals”. Lodhia clarifies,“There was nothing illegal about it. Just clean fun.” However, they have moved the dance party to an inside room with a 250 square feet space. The remaining two rooms of the cafe can be occupied by those looking to grab a bite or socialise over a drink.
