Gurgaon: Stones pelted, shots fired as two families come to blows; councillor among 12 nabbed

A fight between two families in Gurgaon snowballed as the two sides came to blows, with shots being fired and stones pelted, on Friday. The incident left three men injured. Police said they have arrested 12 people, including a councillor.

According to police, around 9 pm, information was received at Rajendra Park police station regarding gunfire in Dhanwapur. Both groups filed complaints and cross FIRs were registered.

One of the arrested men is a councillor in the area, Navin Dahiya. “Both factions are neighbours… the issue between them has been going on for a while. On Friday, it resulted in a physical altercation,” said ACP (West) Shiv Archan Sharma. He added that Navin’s brother, Sunil, is a history-sheeter and has cases including under the Arms Act registered against him.

An officer said one of the groups alleged interference in their business by the other, which led to the scuffle. At least six vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Police said one of the FIRs was registered on the complaints of Himanshu Dahiya, who claimed his father, Dinesh, was assaulted in his office by Navin’s men. The other was on a complaint by Navin’s wife, Monika, against Himanshu and others for allegedly assaulting the family.

Both FIRs are under sections of the Arms Act and IPC.

CCTV footage of the incident shows a man, allegedly part of Dinesh’s group, ramming his car into three men and getting into a physical altercation. Another man is seen firing at Navin’s family.

While Dinesh’s family claimed he was assaulted by Navin’s men on Friday at his office, Navin’s wife said Himanshu and his brother hurled abuses at the councillor and his brothers and started the assault. She further alleged a man fired at their family before going on a rampage with sticks and bricks.

Nine men were arrested in connection with the FIR on the complaint of Himanshu while three were from the other group.

ACP Sharma said the families have been involved in scuffles before. Police said more arrests would be made in the case.
