The cliche once bitten, twice shy aptly applies in the case of cricketer Manan Sharma. After leaving Delhi and spending two years with Haryana in the quest for better opportunities,Manan has returned to his home state, with the expected springboard not materialising. He might have represented India U-19 while playing for Haryana, but didnt get his chances in the Ranji Trophy, and this is the primary reason behind the prodigals return. And in spite of his earlier departure, the DDCA has welcomed him back, valuing his talent as a worthy asset.
I would say that some decisions in life backfire and moving to Haryana was one among those. But despite the fact that I represented India U-19 as a Haryana player,I feel Delhi cricket is at a much higher level and I can do really well here. I am happy that DDCA has accepted me the way I was and has appreciated my move to join them back, says the 20-year-old Manan.
It was in 2007 that Manan impressed the DDCA selectors with his all-round abilities. His performances then earned him a call up for the one-day format of the List A,and opened the batting on debut against Bengal. But once the season ended,Manan bid adieu to his home state and changed sides. Such a call might have proved a blunder if he hasnt performed well before he left. Perhaps the effort he put in and the dedication he showed in the capital ensured him another chance and moved the selectors to repose faith in the youngster.
The reason why that move didnt hurt is because I performed well. I am thankful that Delhi has given me an opportunity again and I assure not to disappoint them. I am playing well at the moment and hope to continue my form this coming season, he says.
Manan, who plays for Sonnet in the DDCA league, has scored nearly 300 runs and scalped 20 wickets in the summer. These figures contain enough weight to strengthen his credentials as a prospective all-rounder for Delhi in their U-22 campaign. My aim as for now is to play in the U-22 category for Delhi. Last year we have managed a promotion to the elite group and since the tournament will see all the top teams like Tamil Nadu,Mumbai competing,a lot will be at stake. And a good run in the U-22 is the door to playing in the Ranji Trophy and I am looking forward to start from where I left, Manan says.
