IP extension hit-and-run: People rally around 5-year-old victim

Vanshika, the second of three children of the couple, was supposed to start school on April 1, but is now admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Doctors fear they may have to amputate her foot.

Residents of Vidisha Apartments in IP Extension claim the police have become oblivious to the plight of five-year-old hit-and-run victim Vanshika, who is in danger of losing her foot. A car ran over the child’s left foot on March 31 outside the gate of the apartment.

Vanshika’s parents iron clothes for residents of the apartment. Their ironing stall is located just outside the apartment gate where the accident also took place.

A resident of the apartment said, “We got to know where the vehicle that injured the girl was parked from car cleaners of our society, who also work for the owner of that car. They identified it through the number plate, which had been noted by eyewitnesses on the day of the accident.”

The resident added, “We took the investigating officer and pointed out the vehicle on April 2. He even went and spoke to the owners of the car, but now he has stopped responding to our calls… We want the little girl to get justice. Her childhood has been ruined. We don’t want this case to be lost before it even starts.”

Vanshika, the second of three children of the couple, was supposed to start school on April 1, but is now admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Doctors fear they may have to amputate her foot. She had a second blood transfusion Thursday.

Residents of the area are trying to drum up support for the child. “A lot of local interest in the case has been generated,” said Kamini Tankha, a resident of Vidisha Apartments. “St. Andrews Senior Secondary School, which is just across the road, has also been offering to help, through collections and such. For now, we are trying to get speed breakers constructed on this road so that such incidents do not happen again.”

When contacted, senior police officers said they did not know about the status of the case but would look into the matter.
