ITBP constable accuses cop-husband, in-laws of assault, dowry torture

The woman has accused her in-laws of pressuring her for dowry since then.

An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) constable has lodged a complaint against her husband, a constable with the Uttar Pradesh Police, and in-laws, alleging assault, torture for dowry and threat to her life.

Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) has registered a case on the complaint of the ITBP constable, who is posted at BSF Hospital in Delhi. In her FIR, the woman said she was not allowed to talk to her parents and her husband beat her severely on many occasions. She has accused her husband of trying to injure her private parts with a knife in 2013.

She stated in her FIR that her husband claimed he knew senior UP police officers and would eliminate her family members, and could also implicate them in a false case. According to the FIR, the couple, both from UP, loved each other and “exchanged garlands” in 2007 without the consent of their families. They were married in June 2010 with everyone’s consent, with the woman giving Rs 2 lakh monetary help to her husband, the FIR stated. According to the FIR, the marriage was registered in July 2012.

The woman has accused her in-laws of pressuring her for dowry since then. “They started demanding dowry… and used to say had they married their son on their own, they would have got a dowry of Rs 20 lakh,” her FIR stated. The SPUWAC had arranged counselling sessions and initiated a mediation process in the case, but it did not bear positive results, said a police source. “The investigation is underway and the ITBP constable has been called for further questioning on September 8,” the source added.
