The students also said that other universities have fully resumed physical classes and cited an online opinion survey done by them in which 36 out of 39 students voted in favour of offline classes. File. Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to hold admissions for eight courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in the 2022-23 academic session, the university’s Registrar told The Indian Express on Monday. For the remaining courses, it will hold admissions as per past practice through its own entrance exams.
“We will hold entrances of eight courses through the CUET. For the remaining courses, we will hold admissions through our own entrances. Once we hold admissions to these eight courses through CUET, and once we have experience based on these courses, then we will think about what to do for the rest of the courses,” Registrar Nazim Hussain Jafri told The Indian Express.
All eight courses for which CUET will be held are undergraduate courses. These include six BA (Hons) courses — Sanskrit, Hindi, French & Francophone Studies, Spanish & Latin American Studies, Economics, and History. The other two courses are B.Sc Biotechnology and B.Voc (Solar Energy). “The decision was taken in a meeting of the Deans of various departments,” said the Registrar.
In a statement, Jamia PRO Ahmed Azeem said, “It has been decided in a meeting attended by top officials of the university that admissions for selected undergraduate courses will be done through CUET. The university has communicated to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Testing Agency (NTA) about the same.”
Asked if the UGC would accept the decision of Jamia — especially with it being a Central University — Jafri said, “I don’t know about all this. This is the decision that our body has taken and if they don’t accept it, we will call another meeting and see what to do about it.”
Students who are interested in applying to these eight courses would have to fill online forms of CUET as well as Jamia. They have been advised to follow university websites, http://www.jmi.ac.in and http://jmicoe.in, for updates regarding courses and other details.
“As per past practice, the university will admit students in B.Tech programme on the basis of score in JEE and admission in BDS programme will be done on the basis of score in NEET. B.Tech aspirants are required to fill JEE form as well as JMI,” Azeem said in the statement.
