Sunil Kumar Jhajharia was elected president of NSUI’s JNU unit on Friday after a two-day election process that saw members electing delegates, who in turn elected the state executive. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to visit JNU on Friday before the polling process began but the event was postponed as the party is mourning the death of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Meenakshi Natarajan,AICC general secretary in charge of NSUI,had visited the campus on Thursday. Shashi Tharoor,Sachin Pilot and Deepender Hooda had had an informal post-dinner interaction at a packed hall on August 30.

The election date had to be moved back a day as members of JNU NSUI protested the proposed age limit. The students claimed JNU,being a research institution, had far too many members above the prescribed age limit of 27 years.
