The 22-year-old JNU student,Roshni Gupta, who was attacked with an axe by her classmate nine days ago, continues to grapple with the aftermath of her head injuries at Safdarjung hospital.
While doctors termed Roshnis recovery so far remarkable, they said she may have developed a new complication from the head injuries her body is unable to retain the requisite amount of water a condition known as diabetes insipidus (DI). But they are yet to confirm this.
Doctors at the hospital said the condition results from a shortage of the hormone antidiuretic hormone (ADH) stored and released from the pituitary gland.
We have been observing for the last few days that her urine output is more than the fluid she is consuming. We think Roshni may have developed DI,due to injuries to that part of the brain where the pituitary gland is located. It is a fairly common problem associated with head injuries. We will observe her for the next few days and conduct urine and blood tests for confirmation, a senior doctor said.
Doctors said considering the extent of Roshnis head injuries both on the front and sides of the skull her recovery has been remarkable.
She is trying to mouth her name, which is a big development, considering the damaged areas also control speech. Progress is usually very slow in extensive head injuries and we are pleased with the progress so far. Roshnis vitals are stable, and she is not on respiratory support, a doctor said.
Doctors said only Roshnis brother was visiting her in the ICU and she was able to recognise him.
Roshni sustained at least four skull fractures and underwent two brain surgeries on July 31 when she was brought to the hospital.
