The Gurgaon police said they arrested a man for allegedly smuggling 26 cattle in a truck on the Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway to Nuh on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
Upon receiving information, a police team, along with cow vigilantes, set up a checkpoint near Panchgaon on the KMP Expressway. Around 3.30 am, a truck filled with cows arrived, and when the team signalled it to stop, the truck driver allegedly sped away. “With the help of gau rakshaks, the police stopped the truck, and one person on board fled. The truck driver was arrested and identified as Nafees, a 28-year-old resident of the Nuh district,” the police said.
In various videos of the incident, several men can be seen chasing the truck and filming the chase by chanting slogans like “Jai Shri Ram”. At one point, the truck is seen jumping over a divider on the highway and the group of men are seen chasing the truck, hurling abuses.
They are heard telling each other to get their guns out to stop the truck. However, police said that though the video shows people speaking about firing, no shot was fired. In this incident, no shots were fired in any way. The reports of gunfire are baseless, false, and misleading, a spokesperson of the Gurgaon police said.
The truck had eight cows and 18 oxen, and two of the cattle were dead, the police said. All the seized cows were sent to the Manesar cow shelter. A complaint was filed by the cow vigilantes at the Bilaspur police station.
Abhishek Gaur, Gurgaon Bajrang Dal leader, who was part of the raid, said they handed the accused over to police. “We followed them for many kilometres, after which they jumped the divider and crossed to the wrong side. We followed and signalled them to stop, but they did not and the truck’s tyre got damaged. When we caught hold of the truck, many men fled from it and the other accused was handed over to the police,” Gaur said.
