‘Apologise or move out’: Congress leader Aiyar’s daughter gets RWA notice over Ram Mandir remarks

Suranya Aiyar should have understood the temple was built after 500 years and a 5-0 SC verdict, says RWA.

Days after the daughter of Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, Suranya Aiyar, said she would “stand against the Ram Mandir consecration”, the resident’s welfare association (RWA) n Delhi’s Jangpura Extension has sent a letter to her and her father, seeking an apology for “creating tension and hatred”.

While Mani Shankar Aiyar could not be reached for comment, Suranya said that she does not live in the Jangpura house, which is owned by Mani Shankar Aiyar, as per an affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Suranya posted on Facebook, “The relevant Residents Welfare Association is from a colony where I do not live… You all know me. I have studied, worked and done activism with people of all political backgrounds for nearly half a century now in India. So, I leave my work here on my Facebook and YouTube pages for you to think for yourselves. I am going to try and avoid a media circus as I believe that we all in India deserve better. Let us stop abusing each other and try some thinking instead. Jai Hind!”

The letter signed by Dr Kapil Kakar, president of Jangpura Extension RWA, asked the duo to “move out to another residential colony, in case they believed what they did was correct”.

The RWA has also asked Mani Shankar Aiyar to condemn his daughter’s “act”. “In case you still think what you have done in protesting against the consecration of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya (is correct), we would suggest you kindly move out to another colony, where people and RWAs can turn a blind eye to such hatred,” said the letter.

Calling it a “hate speech act”, Dr Kakar said it was their “responsibility to ensure cordial relations between all residents”. “A hate speech and act by a resident like you, Ms Aiyar, for announcing a three-day fast in a peace-loving locality, where most residents inhabiting came from Pakistan after losing all their wealth and fortune, is highly unfortunate,” read the letter.

The letter also said that Aiyar should have understood that the Ram Mandir was built after 500 years and a 5-0 Supreme Court judgment. “You might take the cover of freedom of speech, but please remember, as per the Supreme Court, freedom of speech cannot be absolute. We request you to kindly follow the norms of a good citizen and do not provoke anyone by creating hatred and mistrust amongst people,” said the letter. Kakar also said that he and the RWA understand that the Aiyars live in the Jangpura Extension house.

Reacting to the “terse letter” of the Jangpura Extension RWA, BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on X, “This should serve as a message for everyone, who think abusing Hindu beliefs is par for the course. The Jangpura Extension Welfare Association, in a terse letter, have asked Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar and his daughter to apologise for defiling the Pran Pratistha ceremony at Ram Mandir, and leave the residential colony.”
